Former Formula 1 driver Heikki Kovalainen has embraced a new off-road endeavor by joining Jenson Button’s Extreme E team for the 2023 season, marking a significant shift from his F1 days.
Having transitioned to rallying in recent years, Kovalainen has demonstrated his versatility by clinching victories in the Japanese Rally Championship and making a commendable debut in the World Rally Championship. Despite committing to a full-time rallying program in Finland this year, Kovalainen remains active in Japan, including participating in the upcoming Shinshiro Rally.
Now, with his addition to JBXE alongside retained driver Hedda Hosås, Kovalainen is gearing up for the challenge of Extreme E in Saudi Arabia.
Expressing his enthusiasm for this new chapter, Kovalainen remarked, “It’ll be something new again in my career.” He embraces the opportunity to compete in a championship known for its fierce competition among top teams and drivers. While acknowledging the steep learning curve ahead, Kovalainen is eager to rise to the occasion and hopes to adapt quickly to the unique demands of Extreme E.
Team owner Jenson Button sees Kovalainen’s recent rallying exploits as a valuable asset, making it an easy decision for the team to enlist him. Button expressed his delight in welcoming Kovalainen to the team while also praising Hosås for her continued progress and dedication.
