Maximilian Guenther of Maserati MSG Racing clinched victory in the inaugural Tokyo E-Prix, overcoming polesitter Oliver Rowland in an electrifying race that saw five different winners from the first five races of Season 10.
Guenther seized the lead on Lap 24 after a closely contested battle with Rowland, who had led for much of the race. With energy levels dwindling towards the end, Guenther strategically positioned himself behind Rowland, conserving energy for a final push.
As Rowland struggled to maintain his position, Guenther made a decisive move to take the lead, fending off multiple challenges from the Nissan driver in the closing laps. The victory marked Guenther’s first win since Jakarta in Season 9 and Maserati MSG Racing’s first triumph of the season.
The race showcased the intense competition in Formula E, with the top three runners separated by less than a second for much of the race. Reigning champion Jake Dennis secured third place after a fierce battle with Antonio Felix da Costa, who finished fourth ahead of Pascal Wehrlein.
Nico Mueller of ABT CUPRA claimed sixth place, while Nick Cassidy impressed with a seventh-place finish after starting 19th on the grid. However, Edo Mortara, who initially finished seventh, was disqualified for energy overuse.
Robin Frijns secured eighth place for Envision Racing, with Sergio Sette Camara of ERT finishing ninth and Sacha Fenestraz of Nissan rounding out the top ten.
With Guenther’s victory, Cassidy and Wehrlein are now tied for the lead in the Drivers’ standings, while Jaguar TCS Racing maintains its position at the top of the Teams’ World Championship.
Formula E enthusiasts can anticipate more thrilling action as the series heads to Italy for a double-header at Misano on April 13th and 14th.
